New VA Housing Grants Benefit Injured Vets

New VA Housing Grants Benefit Injured VetsRecent changes in the laws governing VA benefits are slated to help provide for injured Veterans.  Servicemembers and Veterans could only receive special grants for housing from the VA only one time.  Now, with the new changes the housing grant program can be accessed up to three different times, as long as the total stays inside of the limits that are prescribed by law.

Veterans who have been injured while on active duty qualify, and have more than earned this important benefit. Adaptive and special housing grants allow Veterans with handicaps and disabilities, especially ones that resulted from active duty to modify their homes, or in some cases the grants can be used to construct or purchase home for these brave heroes.  Now the law allows Veterans to more easily access this grant program, and to use it more than one time.

The Veterans Administration has mailed more than sixteen thousand individual announcement letters to Vets who qualify for this program.  It is a significant change in the previous regulations, and is one well received by the Veteran and Wounded Servicemember community.
Many Servicemembers qualify for the grants but have never used them, or because they received less than the entire amount in an initial use have believed that they did not qualify for any additional funding.  Now, with the changes in the law, if a Veteran has not reached the maximum funding amount they can reapply and be eligible for more Housing Grant funding.

These housing grants are administered with an eye toward providing for individual and specific needs. The Veterans Administratio0n works with the Servicemember, architects, design professionals, contractors and other housing specialists to address the specific needs of each Servicemember. Since its inception in the 1940s there have been over six hundred Fifty million dollars distributed in grants to wounded and disabled veterans.  Nearly thirty five thousand veterans have used this benefit in the past.

Since the changes in the VA regulations went into effect, nearly forty five hundred applications have been turned into the VA.  Thirty nine hundred veterans of these have been found eligible for funds and over two hundred grants have already been awarded since the law change.

Veterans who are eligible for this benefit are those with Service related disabilities.  Veterans who receive VA compensation for “Total and Permanent disability” are qualified to receive these VA housing grants. There are three separate types of these grants available, it is a wise idea to check with the VA to see if you would qualify under the new law changes.
