Why Join the National Guard?

Why Join the National GuardThe National Guard is a branch of the military that allows people to serve part-time. If you join the National Guard, you’ll give up one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer to your National Guard training. This is very different than recruits in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps who go to basic training for several weeks and then remain in the military full-time for a prescribed amount of time.

National Guard soldiers may be able to serve part-time, but they can be deployed just the same as any other soldier. So joining the National Guard doesn’t mean that you’ll always get to stay at home. You can be sent to war zones and domestic disaster areas to help with rescue and peacekeeping efforts.

Other soldiers will generally be stationed at a base and remain there for their active duty, living the military life every day. National Guard members have the opportunity to work in their civilian jobs and live in their regular homes while only giving up those times for training and development.

National Guard members also get military benefits like healthcare, education and other benefits that attract many people to join the military in the first place.
