Think of all those monthly bills you pay in civilian life – rent, utilities, food, healthcare, education, and more … then imagine WHAT life would be without them, or with some of them heavily subsidized … in the US military. If you did pause to compare the two, WHERE would you prefer to be?
Well, this may be the easiest question you ever answered, but if you need more convincing, here are a few attractive allowances that the US Military offers all enlisted personnel. Take a good look, and then decide which way you’d like to go.
Housing Allowance – Reducing expensive housing costs
The US Military offers enlisted personnel a generous, housing allowance, known as Basic Allowance for Pay or BAH. This allowance is not subject to taxes, and is offered as a cash substitute to meet costs of (alternative) housing, where government quarters are not available, or to meet expensive housing costs in particular cities/states.
The amount of BAH is computed on the basis of rank, marital status, number of dependents and location. Another allowance called BAH II is offered to such personnel who are either Reservists on active duty, or troops in transit from overseas.
Cost Of Living Allowance – Making living less expensive
Another attractive, benefit offered to enlisted personnel by the US Military, is the Cost Of Living Allowance or COLA. This allowance helps enlisted personnel to meet a portion of their living costs, specifically, in cities/states where the cost of living exceeds the national average by 8%. COLA is also available to active-duty personnel and Reservists living overseas.
