First Effort In Thumaniyah Rousing Success
After being told by area Iraqi leaders of the need for help in the village of Thumaniyah, soldiers from Battery A, 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery responded. They delivered over four hundred cases of bottled drinking water to the village. They also provided an impromptu medical clinic at the school nearby, treating over one hundred sixty children and women.
“The council told us here was a spot that had not received a lot of help, and we had never been there before,†said Captain Chas Cannon. “We took over two small classrooms temporarily and set up a clinic,†said Cannon. “We were successful to treat a great number of nose, throat, and ear infections, and some other issues,†said Cannon.
“We mainly were focused on delivering drinkable water, but as long as we were there it was great to be able to provide some medical aid also,†stated Captain Cannon. “There are a great number of villages in and around Sabbah Nissan that are small and can get overlooked easily,â€
“As long as the local government council asks us to respond, we will keep responding,†said Captain Cannon. Cannon and his troops have responded with supplies, water, food, and other materials to a number of village missions.
“We are not having to focus on security issues nearly as much as before, this allows us to assist in other areas, in rebuilding and providing supplied for different villages,†said Cannon. Cannon and his men have been involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom since March of last year.
