$600 Buy-up Program
You can also contribute an additional amount of $600 to the GI Bill to receive increased monthly benefits. You can receive up to $5400 in additional GI Bill benefits for the $600.00 contribution. This additional amount must be paid while on active duty.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill took effect on August 1, 2009. This bill covers tuition and fees up to whatever the most expensive state-run school charges. It also pays a monthly living allowance and a $1,000-a-year stipend for books and supplies to any veteran who has served at least 90 consecutive days on active duty since September 11, 2001.
For the first time in history, servicemembers enrolled in the Post-9/11 GI Bill program will be able to transfer unused educational benefits to their spouses or children starting Aug. 1, 2009.
