Air traffic controllers in the National Guard, Navy, Air Force and other US Military branches ensure runway safety and safety in the air around airports. Traffic controllers working from the runway receive messages from tower controllers and use those messages to safely direct pilots when and where to take off from and land at by using bright orange hand instruments and signaling movements. Air traffic controllers in control towers monitor traffic in the area and relay necessary messages to controllers on the ground.

Air traffic controller experience, obtained serving in the US Military, gives veterans advantages over civilian applicants for civilian air traffic controller careers. To become a civilian air traffic controller, a candidate must possess experience in the field or reach a minimum age requirement of 30 years. Military air traffic controllers begin their job before reaching 30 years of age and pull in over $60,000 yearly and even more later on in civilian career positions.
