Service members are often exposed to hazardous conditions. It is the job of the Navy industrial hygiene officer to set the standards for the health and safety of Military personnel. These officers must focus on manage living, working and operating environments by protecting civilians, service members and equipments. Industrial hygiene officers monitor the environment for hazardous material, safety, pollution and chemical or biological agents and develop disposal and preventative methods for the safety of all.



US Navy Education Qualifications for Industrial Hygiene Officers

The Navy requires these officers to first obtain a master or bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, environment sciences, industrial engineering, industrial safety, chemistry or public health before seeking a position in this Navy career field. In addition to this career specific educational qualification, officers must also meet the Navy Medical Service Corps basic active duty requirements for employment consideration.



Putting the Experience and Educational Training to Use after the Navy



Continue your career with the Navy until retirement age or seek out civilian careers using your educational training and experience as a Navy industrial hygiene officer. Officers may work for the Navy until retirement age or retire to work in civilian laboratories, factories, hospitals, private corporations or for the government providing the same services as they did while serving in the US Navy.
