There are a lot of different construction type jobs in the Army. Renovations and remodeling are going on constantly at Army Facilities around the country and worldwide. And a trained worker working in his assigned field is worth his weight in gold. If you select Army Metal Working as your specialty or MOS job, you will receive top-level training and a skill that you can trade on for the rest of your life.
A person working in the Army Metal working field deals with shaping and forming metal. Various construction projects use as a building material different sizes and shapes of sheet metal. An Army Construction metal worker installs and fabricates sheet metal into useful uses, such as vents, gutters, air ducts, even roofs. They are also involved in designing and fabrication of custom parts to repair pre-existing metal structures and metal work on various types of buildings. They even sometimes repair parts of boats or vehicles making special parts out of metal.
In this regard, when working on vehicles the Metal Worker in the Army is responsible for the repair and maintenance of metal body parts, hulls, accessories of metal for Army amphibious vehicles and watercraft. They also repair and replace parts such as fuel tanks and radiators, and at times work on vehicle frames and components. Some of your duties as a metalworker in the Army might include:
-Welding nonferrous and ferrous metals using inert gas, electric arc, and oxyacetylene welding.
-Repairing, installing and replacing different body components made of metal.
-Various metal work fabrication as required for different Army missions.
To be a metal worker in the Army you start with basic training as with any new enlisted recruit. From there you will to individual advanced training school for 13 weeks. You will spend time during your schooling working actively in the field in on the job type training scenarios and also learn techniques and information in the classroom. You will learn skills such as:
-Duct work, and sheet metal layout and design.
-Care and use of different types of welding equipment.
-Care and use of different types of brazing and soldering equipment.
If you have interests in the Industrial Arts, and have a good background in working with mechanical things or training in metal work, this may be a good selection career wise for you.
As you advance in your career, senior enlisted Army metal workers supervise and help train other soldiers in the Metal arts.
