To join the famed Submariners Service you have to be at the top of your game. You cannot be a person who shirks stressful situations, or someone who is not able to function while the earth is falling around their ears. Officers in the Submarine service are some of the finest Navy personnel to be found, and they uphold a fine tradition of officers preceding them over the years in United States History.
The position of Officer on a United States Naval Submarine is to manage, control and operate one of the Fleets Submarines. The United States maintains the most advanced fleet of submarines in the world, including guided missile Subs, Attack submarines, ballistic missile submarines, and other various types and specifications of submarines. They patrol the worlds oceans at will, gathering information, hiding out and being close to invisible, and monitoring forces and hostile enemy activity around the world. They intercept and interpret electronic communications, and serve as a mobile delivery platform for ordinance and personnel to any of the world’s oceans or bodies of water accessible from the sea.
The Submarine Service and by extension its submarines is the most stealthy, most important deterrent that the United States has in its arsenal. The role of the Submariner Officer is to make sure everything and everyone on board the Submarine are functioning well, and doing their assigned tasks. The Submarine Officer is part of a small number of highly focused and disciplined officers responsible for the entire submarine, its cargo, and its crew. All Officers in the United States Navy are required to be college graduates. If you are pre selected for future service as a Submarine Officer, you can participate in the Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate program. This program pays you a healthy stipend of from $2,600 dollars a month to up to $4,100 dollars a month plus an additional $15,000 dollar selection bonus. Following graduation from college you will attend a twelve-week OSC school to learn how to become a commissioned Naval Officer.
Following Officer Candidate School, officers selected for Submarine School begin a 24-week course at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command. This course assists students in learning about nuclear propulsion, and trains them on dealing with an actual operating nuclear reactor.
Following that course all Submarine Officers attend the Basic Sub Course, which is an additional twelve-week course.
