3rd Infantry Obtains And Delivers Equipment To Iraqi Child
The small boy sat in a chair waving to soldiers as they passed by his home in Arab Jabour. He always seemed to have a big smile on his face, and it was not long before some of the soldiers that passed by regularly stopped to introduce themselves, and got to know the boy and his parents.
They discovered that young 7-year-old Yasser Mahmed was a happy child, despite having nerve damage to both of his legs. They also discovered that the only way he could get around was by the graces of his older 12-year-old cousin lugging him from place to place.
Well the Soldiers of Company D, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry sprang into action, and sent for a wheelchair for young Yasser. They obtained one fitted to the young boy, with rugged tires so that he finally would have some mobility on his own.
“We are very appreciative of all your help and kindness, I want to say thank you again,†said the boys father, Yasser Mahmed Hussen. “We could not afford anything like this on our own,†said Mr. Hussen.
The role of family cannot be overstated in Iraqi life. For many communities, family is everything. The ability of the soldiers to complete their mission in assisting and rebuilding Iraq depends largely on the amount of trust they can develop with individual families. Efforts such as this help build this sort of trust.
“Our goal overall is to promote and build trust in the community,†said 1st Lieutenant Bryan Deminico, Company D Platoon Leader. “Our ability to do small things such as this helps us to build this trust,†said Deminico.
