Working with Aircraft in the Air Force is a rewarding and challenging job choice. Working as a Flight Engineer Apprentice you can work to learn to fill a position as a Helicopter Flight Engineer. Helicopter Flight Engineer- You will work as a mainstay of the helicopter crew, performing post flight, pre flight and during flight inspections on the aircraft while away from home. You will record data, and compile and compute various information on performance, aircraft balance, and aircraft weight. You will record data and information on aircraft and helicopter performance, including climbs, takeoffs, cruises, and to keep the flight engineers log updated. It will be your job to monitor and operate aircraft systems, engine indicators, and various engine controls. You will routinely assist the pilot on engine starts, and monitor warm ups, engine shutdown, as well as various flight operations. It is your job to monitor and be alert for alarms and indicators for depressurization, overheating, fire, systems failures, or other abnormal conditions. You will be responsible for keeping in constant communications with the pilot, and assisting the Pilot in various duties.
After Basic Training you will attend Technical school, where you will be trained in how to operate as a Helicopter Flight Engineer. Basic knowledge of flight, along with electrical and mechanical theories, as well as specific skills and training on state of the Art Air Force systems will be taught to you. You will learn to perform in flight maintenance and what to do in emergency conditions. A variety of aircraft procedures will be shown and taught to you, and you will learn to use and interpret schematics, diagrams, and performance charts.
Prior knowledge in the industrial arts is one way that you can prepare, as well as any aptitude you may have in working with engines or electrical systems. During technical school you will spend time both in the classroom as well as in the field, learning about hydraulic, mechanical and even pneumatic systems, and their operation. Skills in communication, navigations, aircraft procedures and many other subjects are covered in your technical school training.
