One of the advantages in working in the Navy as a Photographic Technician is the world is your oyster. Literally anywhere that the Navy is located at may be a potential duty station for you, if you choose to work in the Photography Navy Technician field. Hawaii, Japan, Iceland, Italy, anyplace that the United States Navy, and in some cases the Marine Corps, are stationed may be an assignment if you become a Navy Photographic technician. It does not matter if your interest is in writing, illustration, design or photography itself, this area of Navy enlisted jobs is growing and has been looked at as an elite group for a long time.
You may be called to use state of the Art photography equipment to create graphics, or design a layout for a specific news conference. Perhaps you will be responsible for setting up and creating a Pentagon briefing with graphics and materials. You may have any number of different assignments, sometimes several in the period of day’s weeks or months. As part of the Navy Photographic occupational specialty, you may be assigned to:
-Cover troops in the field as a Navy Combat Cameraperson.
-Prepare and construct illustrations, graphics, original art and other media forms.
-Work as one of the Navy’s elite professional photographers.
-Use state of the art photography, video and presentation equipment.
-Run and operate printing presses.
-Use and operate desktop publishing and computer systems and software.
-Assist public affairs officers in media and troop briefings.

This is a career that is highly specialized, it all depends what your talents, motivation, goals and aptitudes are. You can design a course for yourself in the Navy to do a number of different areas in Navy Photography, or you can merely specialize on a single talent or skill, it’s all up to you. Training for a career in Navy Photography begins in Basic Training, where you learn basic Navy skills and how to be a member of the worlds largest Naval Force. Then you will attend technical school, where your training will vary depending on what area of photographic arts you specialize in.
After your technical school training, you will be assigned to your first command. You literally could be assigned anywhere in the world, the possibilities are endless. You have the ability to travel because of the nature of the Photography occupation more than many people, and sometimes you will travel on assignment on a consistent basis.
