Rashid District Marketplace Opens

Rashid District Marketplace Opens60th Street Operations Began Aiding Native Shopkeepers

Restoration projects and efforts to rebuild Iraq are continuing. Soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment are working with citizens and Iraqi Government officials on restoration and building projects in the Rashid District of Iraq.

There are many projects on the drawing board; chief among them has been an effort to restore the property along 60th street. This has involved a multi step process, three different steps: Clean and restore the 60th street region, provide security, and encourage citizens to open businesses by using a micro grant program.

Last fall there were no open shops in the Rashid District Market. In December there were 7 shops operating. As of the end of February, there are now 53 shops open.

“We began first with security and clean up last fall,” said Captain Wynes. Captain Wynes is a civil affairs team member of 2nd Squadron. In the first efforts in clean up and security the Iraqi Army took charge, and set up three different checkpoints along 60th street. This has helped settle the community and make security in the region much better.

“The security is improved and the community leaders feel more secure with the Iraqi Army efforts.” Said Captain Wynes. When the security improved then local sanitation contractors were employed by joint forces to help prepare the location and get it read for business use.

“The National government of Iraq is helping with rebuilding and cleaning operations, providing funds and support. Along with our contacts and financial assistance the repairs are going along swiftly,” said Captain Wynes. Efforts at cleaning and rebuilding proceed not only for 60th street but also in other areas of Hadar.

Owners of businesses and prospective owners can now apply for grants via the micro grant system, and money to establish or re start businesses is available,” said Captain Wynes.
