Sons Of Iraq Give Weapons To CoalitionSoldiers Receive Explosive Cache

Forward Operating Base Kalsu, Iraq- A surprising amount of ordnance and explosives has been discovered and turned over to Coalition soldiers recently by members of the Sons of Iraq citizen groups.

One incident taking place in Hawr Rajab, a Son of Iraq member came forward and told soldiers in Troop B, 6-8 Cavalry regiment, 4th BCT, 3rd Infantry of a smaller cache of weapon that he and his fellow Sons of Iraq members had found. Upon investigation 5 small barrels of nitric acid were recovered.

In a separate incident, the Sons Of Iraq group operating in Zambraniyah physically brought several items making up a weapons cache to Troop C, 6-8 Cav Regiment, temporarily attached to 2nd BCT, 3rd Infantry. The cache of weapons brought to them consisted of three pressure plate live IED devices, three IED bomb initiators, and three 57 mm ammunition projectiles. These weapons are hazardous to transport, but were moved innocently and without knowledge by the Sons of Iraq members.

A third cache was detected from the air by an Apache Helicopter air weapons team. They were flying near Busayefi when they noticed a dip in the ground, and radioed to coalition troops and Sons of Iraq forces working nearby.

Upon investigation the ground forces found a barrel with weapons inside. Four AK-47 rifles,
Four AK-47 magazines, two RPG rocket launchers, one mortar tube, five rocket propelled grenades, two boxes of cell phones, 70 drums of 7.62 ammunition, and various electronic components were discovered in the caches.

“These discoveries help give confidence to the Sons of Iraq, and help increase confidence by citizens in the ability of their security and the Sons Of Iraq teams,” said Major Mike Adams. Major Adams is the Operations Officer for 6-8 Cavalry Regiment.
