If you enjoy working with and helping people then working in the Optical Lab in the Army may be the career choice for you. Army Optical lab specialists are trained in a multitude of different procedures all dealing with helping provide quality eye care. Army Soldiers require eyeglasses, eye exams, and contact lenses just as the general public do, and as a trained Optical Lab specialist you will help different Army personnel in different ways with their eye care needs.
An Army Optical Laboratory Specialist works as part of the Army optical lab team, and is an essential member of the group that helps provide quality efficient service to Army personnel around the world. The main duty of Optical Lab Specialists is to make and adjust eyeglasses, frames and lens for Army Personnel. You will be responsible primarily for taking various parts such as frames, lens, hinges, and earpieces and making them into a usable pair of eyeglasses. You will take pre surfaced single vision style lenses and assemble these parts under direction into prescription eyewear. Some of your duties may include:
-Making and Repairing Eyeglasses.
-Surfacing and resurfacing prescription lenses.
-Assembling parts into prescription eyewear.
-Being responsible for supervising others in eyewear manufacture.

Training for the position of Army Optical Specialist includes the requisite 9 weeks of basic training, the same as any enlisted Army Soldier. After Basic training you will attend individual advanced training for 22-24 weeks, where you will be taught optical theory and basic lab procedures. Following your technical school training you will be assigned to a larger command where you can be mentored by senior enlisted lab staff.
After a period of continued mentoring and training, you will be assigned your own duty station. At a smaller Army facility you may be the only technician who is responsible for working with an Army optical doctor, or doctors. You will then work to help provide eyeglasses for the soldiers in your command. Working in the optical field is work for a person who is detail oriented, and who enjoys working with tools and doing fine, detailed work.
If you are a person who can follow detailed instructions, and have the ability to do fine precision work under at times stressful conditions, then you may be well suited for this job field.
