Aged Weapons Cache Discovered

Aged Weapons Cache Discovered4th BCT Soldiers Discover and Destroy Old Explosives

In another incidence of success the soldiers of Company B, 3rd Infantry, 4th BCT, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd battalion discovered a cache of what appeared to be very old weapons and explosives. These weapons appear to have been abandoned, and may have been there for several years. The weapons were discovered during a routine patrol near Babbahhani this last week.

The printing on the weapons was old and in some cases worn off. And the type and style of the weapons, from the explosives to the ammunition rounds suggest that these weapons may have been there from perhaps the days of the Iran-Iraq war era. The markings seem to indicate that the weapons had been there several years, if not a decade or more.

“We are working to make sure we seize and destroy any and all weapons caches we discover, ancient or not,” said Sergeant First Class Xaiver Perdue. Sgt Perdue is the 2nd Platoon Sergeant with the 4th BCT.

Weapons in the cache included several pounds of explosives, some outdated RPG rounds, and several apparently IED devices fashioned out of crude materials. There were also some outdated Cobra 100mm guided missiles that did not appear to be in operating condition.

All explosives were taken to a remote site and detonated with explosives. The continued trend toward discovered and surrendered explosives is a positive path for Coalition Forces in Iraq. “Every time we discover and destroy weapons caches, these are weapons that can’t be used against our soldiers,” said Sgt. Perdue.
