Senior US Officials Visit MNF CommandDeputy Assistant Secretary Visits Taji And Military Leaders

In an effort to get additional one on one input, and to assess how things are truly going on the ground in Iraq, the DoD sent its Deputy Assistant Secretary to the region to meet with Senior United States Forces Commanders and other Coalition Officials.

Joseph Benkert, Assistant Secretary for Global Security at the Defense Department visited Taji, Iraq this last week and toured the region. He also sat down with MNF leaders and local officials to get an idea of how things are going in Iraq at the current time.

He was tasked to observe and report how the Surge has been progressing, and to see how the foreign military Sales process has worked in providing materials and equipment in rebuilding Iraq military and civilian infrastructure. He met with Iraqi civilian and military leaders, as well as being able to view first hand how things are going on the ground in Iraq.

While in country, Benkert was given a tour of the National Iraqi Maintenance Depot located in Taji. This facility includes the Small Arms Facility, the Track and North depots, and various Humvee Equipment inspection and repair departments of the Depot.

Assistant Secretary Benkert was also given a tour of the Radio Install warehouse, and given a demonstration of the radios used by the Iraqi Military and that they install in their Humvee trucks. “These are radios that allow the Iraqi Military forces to speak to each other without being overheard,” stated Second Lieutenant Nathan Spreitler.

Lt. Spreitler is assigned to the MNF Transition team who advises Iraqi Forces at the Taji Depot facility.
