Marines In Iraq Receive Aerial Recon Unit

Marines In Iraq Receive Aerial Recon UnitRaven B Unmanned Air Vehicle Posted To First Squad Yet In Iraq

The unmanned Aerial reconnaissance unit called the Raven B is being provided to Marine Corps Units in Iraq for the first time. Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, recently went through a course to learn how to operated it. A Raven vehicle training team worked with the Marines in how to effectively operate the system. Previously, the UAV vehicle that was in use was the Dragon Eye, but the new vehicle, the Raven B is judged to be an improvement in endurance and maneuverability.

“Once you get the hang of it, the computer almost flies it for you,” said Corporal Alex Ruffino. Corporal Ruffino is an Intelligence Analyst for 2nd Marines, 3rd Battalion. The new system is designed to be learned quickly, and to have minimal effect on overall force structure or training.

“You would see it as almost a toy airplane, it is literally that easy to get the hang of,” said Captain James E. Lee. Captain Lee is the Raven B team leader, and in charge of training with the new equipment.

The Raven B team gave the Marines a full overview of the applications and system capability of the Raven B, and they all got a chance for detailed hands on training in flying the Raven B. Including pre flight, the systems can be deployed swiftly; it takes only about ten minutes from start to finish to launch the Raven B vehicle.
