Soldiers Deliver Wheelchairs To Disabled

Soldiers Deliver Wheelchairs To DisabledCoalition Troops Work With Iraqi Leaders To Distribute Chairs

In their patrols through the villages nearby the Soldiers of the 10th Field Artillery became aware of a number of citizens that would be in the same place, day after day. They appeared healthy on the outside, but they would be stationary, and in the same place at different times of the day.

After observing this for several weeks, they cautiously approached and made inquiries. These citizens were disabled, and had no means of transportation or mobility, so they would be left in the same spot by family members each day, to observe and interact with passersby, and in some cases to beg for money.

The Civil Affairs Battalion 489th were contacted, and arrangements were made. Several Wheelchairs were specially built and constructed, and after they were finished the Soldiers from the 1-10th FA were given the opportunity to distribute them.

“You could light up the world with the smiles of the people who received these chairs,” said Sgt. Nigel Handy. “The part that we loved the best was the grateful looks from the different citizens that got these chairs.

Through the efforts of the 1-10 FA soldiers, local Iraqi Sheiks identified five citizens who needed chairs because of their disability. The citizens were scattered in five different villages along Butler Range Road.

The Wheel chairs were delivered, and it was an excellent example of cooperation between the Sons of Iraq, the local Iraqi Council, and the Coalition 1-10 Field Artillery unit.
