Salman Pak Market Opens For Business Once Again
Combat Outpost Carver, Iraq- After the fighting had settled down, soldiers who patrol in Salman Pak began to look for things to assist the local citizens. A number of shops had suffered damage, and soldiers from the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team began to meet with shop owners and businessmen to try to find ways to help out.
After a number of micro grants, and other assistance, slowly the shops and marketplace began to take shape once again.
A new market has now reopened in the Salman Pak village on March 11th. Soldiers and local officials attended the ceremonial ribbon cutting that declared the market ready for business. Stores in the market include a photo shop, a candy store, a supermarket, two restaurants, a cell phone shop, and an electronics store.
A total of seven stores were either refurbished, remodeled, or funds provided from coalition sources to allow new businesses to open. Captain Matthew Givens is the officer and project manager from 1st Battalion, who assisted in much of the rebuilding effort. “We selected this particular zone because it is right in the main part of the town, and so much is going on around it,” said Captain Givens.

“Each of the stores was excited to be back. The cell phone store purchased a display case, the electronics store purchased work tools, and the two owners of the restaurants both went out and bought chairs, tables and a refrigerator,” said Captain Givens. “It is a whole different area now,” said Givens.
