There was a time when having an education was not that high of an importance if you chose to enlist in the Armed Forces. You could come sign up, and then enter into any of the Armed Forces as an infantryman, and serve out your enlistment contract without a care in the world or be concerned about having any additional education. There was a time when the military did not even require you to have a high school diploma in order to join. Well those times have changed, as the expectancies of overall life have changed in the public sector, so has the expectations that the military has in regards to education.
Serving in the military today is a very specialized and intense experience. More and more of the military use technology, even in the infantry. If you are serving for example as a Marine Infantryman and you are engaged in battle, it is likely that some member or your team will get on the radio, and after consulting a map or chart, request air support. The signal will go out over the radio waves and be received by another military asset, perhaps a helicopter or fighter wing. They will take the information that is relayed, and fly aircraft worth millions of dollars, to your position to lay down covering fire or weapons to assist you.
With the use of all this technology, it is more important to get an education than any time before. Best of all, the military realizes that, and has a number of educational programs to assist you in getting your education while serving in the military on active duty or in the reserves.

Now if you want to compete in the Armed Forces, you have to have a High School diploma as a minimum, and to be able to use a function with a lot of the available technology you can benefit from additional education. And if you should decide that you want to try to earn a Commission as a uniformed Officer in one of the five services, then you definitely need a four-year degree.
All of these are great reasons to further your education, but they all miss out on the most fundamental reason: YOU. Because the military uses people as its main asset, if you are willing to work hard, then you can use the military to help meet your personal and educational goals.
