One of the more interesting Army Careers is the Field Artillery Meteorologist. Working in Meteorological issues as a member of the Army’s Field Artillery team, you will be responsible to judge weather conditions, and assist as a member of the team. You will determine how the weather will affect the firing of various field Artillery weapons, and help provide input on how to adjust missiles, weapons and other field artillery weapons to allow for variable weather conditions. As a Army Meteorological Artillery Crewmember you may be involved in: assisting in preparing and providing generators for field artillery operations, obtain density and temperature readings for ballistic purposes, prepare and launch weather balloons and take readings, operation and reading of various meteorological equipment, and testing and operating radio transmitters and equipment.
There are a number of other general Field Artillery duties you may perform as a member of the Army Field Artillery team, but as a rule your focus will be on the weather and how it affects the Field Artillery team.
As a member of the Field Artillery team you will work to provide support and assistance in all general Army Field Artillery issues, including set up and dismantling of mobile launch positions, and standing duty in the operation and maintenance locations of Army field Artillery and missile systems. Field Artillery crewmembers have to have good physical stamina, as they are called upon at times to perform their duty for long stretches of time without a break or rest. They are also required to have normal color vision.
Training for the job of Army Field Artillery Meteorological Crewmember starts as always with Army Basic Combat Training, where you will be taught how to be a member of the Army enlisted force and basic soldiering skills. After basic training you will advance to seven weeks of individual advanced training as a Field Artillery Meteorologist. You will participate in classroom and simulated real world combat training evolutions, as well as working with units in the field. Skills that will be taught to you will include: Gun, rocket, and missile system operations, field combat and artillery tactics and strategies, methods of computing location of enemy targets, and ammunition handling techniques. If you are detail oriented, enjoy working under pressure, and have a good ability with math, then you may do well as an Army Meteorological Field Artillery Specialist.
