Working in the Navy as an Entomology Scientist is a field unlike most military careers. You will be working to study and prevent illness by looking at different species of insects and bugs from around the world. There are almost 1 million different species of insects found on planet earth, and as a Navy Entomology Career Science Officer you will have an opportunity to study and work with a great many of these different types of insects as part of your job. You will work to identify and track types of insects that could be a hazard to personnel or that could potentially carry disease, and work to prevent such diseases from being contracted by military personnel.
Insects carry a number of diseases, and serving as a Navy Entomologist you will help protect Navy and civilian personnel from bugs that bear specific diseases. You will be trained and instructed in a variety of specific duties that work to control the insect population or insect effects in a specific area, especially dealing with vector type diseases encountered by the Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.
As a Navy Entomologist you will work to participate, plan, and direct different consultative, operational, quarantine, training and research programs for the control and prevention of insects and nuisance pests. You will conduct research and surveillance on nuisance and disease causing organisms, including venomous plants, animals, insects, rodents, and other vermin and pests. You will work with other personnel to evaluate and create new and innovative control measures, and provide practical training, technical guidance, and on site assistance to senior staff and commanders dealing with risks in battle conditions.

The job of a Navy Entomologist is often as a leader, you will be placed into situations that because of your knowledge and expertise, and your training you will know what should be done and how a problem has to be solved to keep situations safe for all involved. You may be called upon to train civilian and other military personnel, from other Navy Commands, as well performing duties on the staff of preventative medicine details and humanitarian relief efforts.
This is a Commissioned officer Career, designed for the Science student with a degree in science and high marks in entomology undergraduate and graduate courses. You must have a master’s or doctorate degree in entomology or a close field in order to serve in this job specialty in the Navy.
