Coalition And Georgian Troops Bring Food And Toys Near Al Lej
Working together with Coalition Troop partner Georgia, Soldiers from Task Force Petro delivered a shipment of food and toys to villagers and children in Gurtan.
3rd Infantry Division, 3rd HBCT joined with troops from Georgian 13th Light Infantry Battalion to bring much needed food and water, as well as a variety of toys and other supplies. Because of the increase of peace and order, the better security has allowed for more humanitarian actions such as this food delivery.
The Operation Sukihumi completed in early March, and during the clean up operations afterward the soldiers discovered the village of Gurtan, and their need of support and food.
The insurgents and terror cells were cleared out of Al Wehda and the region during Operation Sukihumi and it was only after that the situation in Gurtan was brought to light. The region is slated for various revitalization projects and this food distribution is meant to be the opening act of that kind of action.
Civil Affairs Soldiers from 3rd Heavy BCT team assisted with the food distribution effort.
“We found that many of the villagers in Gurtan and the whole Al Wehda region were needing food and medical attention, we were stunned to see the level of need,†said Captain Jimmy Hathaway. Captain Hathaway is the liaison officer for the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team assigned to Task Force Petro.

“After all of the fighting and devastation from Al Qaeda the remaining villagers in Gurtan are mostly children, women and the elderly,†said Captain Hathaway.
