Detainees Returned To Their Communities
As part of the effort to rehabilitate members of their communities, 22 men were released from Coalition custody.
Of the 22 men that were released, 7 were transported back to their home city of Tarmiya, and 15 were taken back to Taji. Both of these two cities are located to the Northwest of the city of Baghdad.
While in Coalition Custody, the men were treated humanly, and given a chance to worship, and participate in various programs to help them. As they worked through different issues, the men were repeatedly interviewed about their plans for the future.
Before being released each of the men were required to swear an oath before an Iraqi judge, and sign an agreement. The agreement says they will obey the law, and would not break the rules or commit new crimes, not only against Iraqi law but also to commit no criminal acts against the Coalition.

Officials have high hopes for the rehabilitation and detainee release program. “By releasing these men today it reflects how much the security of the region has changed for the better,†said Colonel Todd McCaffey. Colonel McCaffey is the 2nd SBCT commander.
“Security forces and the leadership of Iraq are able to make sure that these men obey the law, and the men themselves have convinced the officials they are ready to make a new life for themselves and their families as law abiding Iraqi citizens,†said Colonel McCaffey.
