Manahel Primary Had Previously Been Missed In Restoration Efforts
There have been a number of schools that have been rebuilt in the area of Kalsu. Several of the schools have been rebuilt and have functioned for some time now.
But one school seemed to fall through the cracks, and did not have any efforts to rebuild it. Until recently.
Soldiers operating with 3rd Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team identified the Primary school in the Village of Manahel and drew together the resources and people to rebuild the school. It had been scheduled on at least two other occasions for rebuilding, but due to security or other issues it somehow had slipped through the cracks of the system.
In the last eight weeks Soldiers from W1 Joint Security Station to the south of the village of Kutimiyah have ventured out into areas that have remained untouched by efforts to rebuild. As part of this effort new routes have been opened into the community, and residents are being interviewed to understand what the community needs.
“Up to now they have felt Isolated because they didn’t think anyone was aware of their needs but that is changing as we speak,” said Captain Richard Aaron. Captain Aaron is Commander of 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 9th Field Artillery, 1st Battalion, and Battery B.

Recently a change of route was approved that brought route clearance and soldiers into the community that is helping change the perception of being ignored.
The school was found in quite poor condition. Al Qaeda had used it fairly recently as a base of operations, and when they cleared out they basically destroyed the whole building. So rebuilding efforts had to literally start from the ground up in places.
