There is a little girl who lives in Al Buaytha who has never experienced eyesight. She was born with corneas in each eye poorly developed, and this has led to ongoing and persistent blindness.

But thanks to the efforts of a young Soldier and his unit, the young girl may be headed for a possible eyesight grant. She has a condition that while genetic can be fixed with surgery. First Lieutenant Michael Kendrick is the platoon leader of 3rd Infantry, 2nd BCT, 30th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Company D. He has met the young girl on a number of occasions, and knows all about young Noor Taha Najee, and her family.

Her eyesight issue is one that runs in the family. Her brother also has the same birth defect, and can only see light sensitivity.

Lieutenant Kendrick and his men have been working hard with medical doctors to try and get some help for the family.

“We want to have her and her brother be able to see someday, to put a face to a sound, to see,” said Lieutenant Kendrick.

A United States eye research group, the Eye Defects Research Foundation is working to try and find a way to provide surgery for the little girl and her brother. The children were transported to Baghdad for a series of evaluations for the eye procedures necessary to correct their sight.

If all goes well, coalition forces will try to transport the family to Los Angeles where possible surgery awaits.
