1st BCT Clear Al Qaeda From SamarraPassageway Out Of The City Cleared Traffic Flows Once Again

Citizens have begun to breathe a little easier in the city of Samarra. The influence and presence of terrorist and insurgents is at the lowest point in years, and citizens are feeling safe to take to the streets once again.

Soldiers with the 1st Brigade Combat team, 101 airborne divisions, Air Assault, commonly referred to as “The Bastogne Troop,” have worked diligently to clear out the remaining presence of Al Qaeda. They have set up checkpoints, and conducted random searches, as well as a series of patrols to make sure that there are no Al Qaeda soldiers operating.

About a year ago, the Al Qaeda hold on Samarra was complete. Citizens were scared to go outside, and the fear that gripped the village was chilling. The nearby Fallujah Road that runs from Samarra to Al Anbar province was completely dominated by insurgents and Al Qaeda ran terror cells.

What a difference one year makes. Now, citizens are free to leave their homes, and to venture in and around the village without fear. The Iraqi locals known that they can also travel freely on the Fallujah road without fear, which is a great improvement.

In the past Al Qaeda had forced all traffic off the Fallujah road, and citizens had to try and find alternated routes. The other routes were not improved, and were a dangerous, dusty and treacherous method of travel. Now, with security improving and the Fallujah Road re opened, citizens are truly breathing more easily.
