3rd BCT Helps Weapons Cache Discovery

3rd BCT Helps Weapons Cache DiscoveryLarge Amount of Explosives And Arms Found

Sometimes it is the little things that lead to the big things in life. After several successful attempts at building bridges among the local Iraqi community, a local citizen approached one of the members of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101 Airborne (Air Assault) and began to give out some valuable information.

The citizen struck up conversation with the intelligence officer for the 3rd BCT, and finally went on to describe a large cache of weapons nearby.

Acting on this tip, a group of soldiers from the 3rd BCT accompanied the civilian to a local abandoned home. In the backyard, buried under some debris and dirt, a large cache of explosives, arms, and guns.

The cache included 2 rocket propelled grenades, two 120mm mortar weapons, forty two 82mm finned mortar rounds, twelve 60 mm mortar weapons, and a large box of over 110 rounds of rifle ammunition. This was a sizable cache, and it all was caused by mere friendliness with the local citizens.

Efforts to create closer relationships between coalition soldiers and Iraqi citizens has really began to pay off. This is the second or third time since the beginning of the year that citizens have approached members of the 3rd BCT with information that directly leads to seizure of weapons.

These weapons were immediately put under guard, until they were transferred to a local Coalition EOD unit, who took the weapons to a cleared field nearby and destroyed them by explosion.
