Eleven Weapons Caches Discovered

Eleven Weapons Caches DiscoveredCoalition Troops Work With Iraqi Forces

There have been a number of caches that have been found, but never more than five or six at a time, until this last week. During a two-day stretch April 7th and 8th, Coalition Forces took possession of 11 separate weapons caches from Iraqi Soldiers. Working as a team, coalition soldiers were led to these caches and took possession of each.

Most of the weapons were found as a result of tips from either citizens or Sons of Iraq members, and in several of the caches the amount of weapons discovered was substantial. There were two caches each found in Nineway, Salah ad Din, and Ta’Mm provinces, along with five separate caches discovered in Diyala province.

Most of the weapons were rockets, mortars and various sized projectiles, along with hundreds of pounds of IED explosives and raw bomb making materials. As security continues to improve both the Sons of Iraq and Iraqi Security Forces are providing intelligence far beyond what has been enjoyed previously. “The number of caches that has been discovered has been substantial,” said Major Peggy Kageleiry, spokeswoman for the MNF North Iraq.

As the coalition forces intercepted each of the caches, they were transported to a nearby range and destroyed by EOD coalition engineers. Each of the Caches destroyed represent a significant threat that was eliminated before it could be used against coalition forces.
