Iraq Deployment Reduced To 12 Months

Iraq Deployment Reduced To 12 MonthsBeginning In August 2008 Troops Will Serve 12 Instead Of 15 Months

The state of our Armed Forces has been severely strained by our soldiers serving in both Afghanistan and Iraq frontiers in the fight against terror. The typical deployment has been consistently 15 months long, and the time as home between deployments has been shorter as a result.

Well all of that is shifting somewhat.

In a bold action announced on Friday President George W. Bush directed the Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates to make the average deployment time for troops in Iraq 12 months. This would be a reduction of three months from the current 15-month deployment schedule.

This is seen as a much-needed action, one that is being praised by military support organizations. President Bush is also directing that Servicemembers should have at least one calendar year at home before their next deployment.

Such down time is seen as a vital link in keeping our military state of readiness. “Iraq as a nation is moving forward, there will come a day in the not too distant future where Iraq will be strong, empowered and able to stand as an ally, but for now our support of them while they making these changes is vital,” said President Bush
