As the insurgents approached, gunfire was exchanged. Dinkintis got into his emergency gear in a hurry as did his fellow soldiers. Sgt Dinkintis returned gunfire and treated several different soldiers in emergency triage treatment, as the fighting continued.
Suddenly Sgt Dinkintis was shot in the chest. He was knocked to the ground, and almost lost consciousness. Despite being shot, Sgt. Dinkintis continued to try and help his fellow soldiers, remaining conscious and directing how medical supplies were needing to be used.
