Revitalized Port Restarts Shipping Daily Activity
The port city of UmQasr has been under fire for a long time, but conditions have began to quiet down. The repeated patrols and actions of various units of the Coalition have turned the tide, and led to the ability of the port city to restart its shipping operations on a large scale. The flow of goods through the Port City is rising, and beginning to approach the level of shipping that was present before the fall of Saddam Hussein.
The port city is located southeast of Basra, and is has Iraqi workers that are busy again with shipping and unloading supplies off of ships waiting to unload. “This port has been a vital link to Iraqi shipping in the past and it is now again a gateway for food import supplies to Iraq,” said Todd Stratton. Mr. Stratton is spokesman for the Task Force to Support Business and Operations Stability in Iraq.

Both Iraqi Security forces and Coalition troops have worked hard to reclaim the port, working to force Al Qaeda and terrorist forces to leave and flee the city. The port has a number of advanced features including a grain silo for loading ships. The hall for passengers being rebuilt at the port is near completion and it will be available for merchants and passengers alike.
“We will have a ferry coming to Dubai several times every week,” said Mr. Stratton.
