Fleet Navy Photographers Mate Specialist

In documenting the history of the Navy, photographers have played a huge part in capturing events, people and situations on film. Navy photographers work to take still photographs, as well as video and motion picture photography, to document and to record the different occasions, events and situations that are part of everyday Navy and military life. In the past the Navy photographers Mate has taken down on film both the conflicts and the triumphs of the United States Navy. Sailors in the photographic and journalist media field serve as the ears and eyes of the rest of the world when it comes to Navy and military activity.

Working as a photojournalist can take you into a number of different areas in your specialty. You may be called to work on a training video for a Combat Operations Team, or you could be called to record images on a mission of humanitarian relief on a foreign shore. If you are technically inclined this is an excellent field, there is a lot of room for people with mechanical and technical skills.

A Navy Photojournalist can be called to act in any number of photographic and journalist roles in support of the Navy Mission. No matter what assignments or mission you may be given, you will be responsible for creatively and effectively gathering and communicating information on assignments on a daily basis. Other responsibilities and duties that you will be involved in the media and news field will include writing and editing news for TV and Radio, serving as a staff assigned photographer, recording and documenting events on video tape and motion picture formats, preparing content and layout spreads for magazines, newspapers, flyers, newsletters, and even web sites, editing and proofreading different materials involved in Navy related news and feature programming, and writing and photographing Navy subjects for articles for numerous publications.

Serving in the Navy as a photojournalist will involve operation and maintenance of video and still photo equipment, and using digital and still photo editing equipment, along with operating and maintenance of darkroom and lab equipment for film processing. You will work in a number of different roles using Navy equipment to record and document all different kinds of Navy events, ceremonies, training and other Navy newsworthy events.
