The field of preventative medicine is one that helps maintain the well being and health of Army personnel and soldiers. Specialists who work in Army Preventative Medicine are key members of the Medical Army Preventative Services Science team. This team works to prevent and study diseases and different types of infections within the Army. The Medicine Preventive Specialist team is responsible for assisting in medicine inspections, surveys, and medicine laboratory procedures. They work to supervise using preventive medicine and operating preventative medicine facilities.
The responsibilities of a Preventative Specialist may involve conducting medicine and prevention of disease inspections, working to develop healthy community education programs, evaluate and analysis of data that is collected, organize sanitation, water, food, and epidemiological surveillance programs, and to conduct medicine preventive inspections.

A Preventative Health Maintenance Specialist with the Army works both with military populations, and also is tasked with dealing with foreign citizens helping to prevent disease, and to solve medical problems that are found in the civilian population. Part of the bridge building that occurs while helping populations in a foreign country involve assisting the general civilian population with their health and illness situations. As a Preventative Medicine specialist you will assist with health education programs, and supervise administrative and technical methods of preventing medicine. Training for a Army Preventive Medicine Specialist involves basic combat training for 9 weeks. After your basic training you will attend individual advanced training for 15 weeks. You will work in medicine prevention and training in both simulated training under battlefield type conditions, and also in the classroom training.
If you have an interest in algebra, chemistry and biology, and are good with technical and scientific type tasks, this may be the job for you. This job requires the ability to follow detailed instructions, and an ability to work under stress. During your advanced training you will study basic human anatomy and physiology, as well as inspection and sanitation procedures. You will complete coursework in the prevention of disease, and learn about the types of diseases and parasites that can affect human beings. You will participate in learning about how to prevent the build up of bacteria in food and water, and how to deal with situations where bacteria contribute to the formation of disease. Civilian jobs that this specialty trains you for include serving as a medical or dental assistant, or as a physician’s assistant.
