Aviation Structural Maintenance Careers

Aviation and the proper care of aircraft is a surprisingly important job task in the Army. There are literally hundreds of missions that require different airplanes or helicopters, and it’s the job of the Aviation Structural Repair team to make sure that the airframes and aircraft are in top running condition. Its their job to make sure that the aircraft is ready to fly, and safe. They inspect as an important part of the Army mission team the helicopters, aircraft, and fixed wing aircraft for service, repair, and troubleshooting of the fuselage and other body framework. The Aviation Repair and Structural Maintenance technician is the person that is charged with the final inspection of the airframe often before flight. Some of the responsibilities that a Aviation Structural repair person may have include applying and mixing fiberglass resin and fiberglass materials, replacing and repairing structural aircraft components including longerons, bulkheads, beams, stingers and aircraft skin, and making parts for the structure, shaping metal and forming blocks, shrinking, stretching and other metal forming techniques. When you work as an Army Aviation Structural maintainer you will work to make permanent and temporary emergency repairs to plastic transparent windows, enclosures and doors, working to apply and mix paints and primers on airframe surfaces, applying control and corrosion treatment to various aircraft metals, and balancing controls of fixed wing aircraft such as ailerons and flags. You will be responsible for making both impromptu and scheduled inspections in performing your repair and maintenance duty. Training for the position of Aviation Structural Maintenance Careers involves starting with 9 weeks of basic combat training, where you learn about what being in the Army enlisted force is like. After boot camp you will work to attend 14 weeks of individual advanced training, where you will work on fiberglass, steel, and aluminum coverings and airframe coverings. The replacement and repair of electrical, fuel and hydraulic systems, and how to repair and disassemble different engine components. If you have an aptitude in mathematics, and an interest in aircraft, and if you have any experience in mechanical work then you should consider this as a possible career field. The position of Aviation Structural Maintenance and repair specialist will give you excellent training for a civilian career in the Aviation industry, with commercial airlines, government agencies or aircraft manufacturers.
