Coalition Boost Mahmudiyah Fish Farms

101st Airborne Works To Support Citizen Efforts

As part of the larger Operation Task Force Marne there is a concerted effort to assist the Fish Farms located in and throughout the Mahmudiyah Qada. Members of the 101st airborne division, 3rd BCT, Rakkasans are working with the local citizens who own fish farms, to assist them in rebuilding and restocking their farms with fish.

One of the main industries in the area was fish farming, and then with the fighting and battle many of the fish farms fell into disuse and disrepair. Fish Farming was one of the top three agricultural businesses that were working in Iraq prior to the Fall of Saddam Hussein. The real amount of farming has fallen since then but it is slowly being restored.

The goal of the industry and fish industry is to revitalization and to look for ways to improve the local system, and make a local economy that Iraqi citizens will be able to work in and sustain over a long term.

When the fish farms are reconstructed there will be a lot of additional jobs. “Many farmers in the area do wish to restore their farms to high capacity but have not been able to do so yet,” said Major Alaric Robinson. Major Robinson is the commander of Company A, 3rd BCT.

Many of the existing farms operate at part of their capacity but that is slowly changing. Each of the coalition battalions in the area are taking a survey to find out just exactly where their help is required.
