Coalition Forces Assist Saving School

Troops Help Village Elder In Preventing Fire Damage

Soldiers working with local craftsmen in the village of Pircuti, in the province of Paktika repaired and renovated the village school. The school had recently been set fire by insurgents, but the enemy forces had been chased away by the village elder and his sons.

Originally constructed by members of the Swedish Forces in 1996 the school serves nearly 1100 students from the Pircuti village and the surrounding area. The roof had been slowly leaking, and the need for other repairs had existed for some time.

Insurgents had broken into the village school and clinic and set fire to the school. They gathered books, furniture and other materials and set them on fire. After setting fire to the school they traveled over to the medical clinic. The village elder Mr. Zarif and his sons rushed to the scene, and a firefight ensued. After some time, Mr. Zarif and his sons successfully chased the insurgents away from the village, while other members of the school and community worked to put the fire out at the school.

“I just wanted the attackers to leave our property alone, the school and clinic are important to our village,” said Mr. Zarif. Following the fire various members of the CTF –101 coalition forces have plans to continue to help the local government in repair and renovation to the school.
