Vacations For Vets Respite Benefits

One of the programs that are offered to Servicemembers and their families who have become partly or totally disabled as a result of military service is the Vacations for Vets respite benefit program. It is a program of outdoor activities such as kayaking, fishing, sailing, hiking and horseback riding. The Greenwell Foundation, a group in Maryland that helps provides assistance and activities support for disabled veterans and others, sponsors it. The program features weekend visits for veterans who wish to vacation and get out into the outdoors. It is a program created to help give support and show appreciation for the service of our veterans to their country.

The program started for veterans who are in the Washington D.C. area undergoing treatment for service connected disabilities. Veterans who were in the area undergoing treatment often did not get much of a chance to get out past their hospital rooms, so the Greenwell Foundation created the program to support these veterans undergoing ongoing treatment and rehabilitation programs. It is aimed at veterans with disabilities and works toward the goal of life inclusion but it is available to any veteran who is even partly disabled. It is a full service type program that seeks to solve and overcome problems that veterans have in participation in typical recreation programs, and it is staffed by trained volunteers to assist the veteran and Servicemembers with full program participation.

The program is located at Greenwell State Park in Southern Maryland. It is on a 600 acre site which has riverfront access to the lower Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County Maryland. It was created by the Greenwell family to give support and assistance to disabled people including disabled veterans, and is currently ran and administered by a non-profit foundation. The foundation is dedicated to providing facilities and services for Veterans who are disabled and other disabled people and to make the Greenwell State Park accessible for all people.

If you are a veteran who lives in the Washington DC area who is disabled, or if you are or know of a veteran who is receiving care at a Veterans facility and wishes to participate in a inclusive outdoors program then the Vacations for Veterans program may be just right for you. It is available first come first serve, and at very reasonable costs to those veterans who have been disabled with a service connected disability and who wish to get out into the great outdoors.
