Remember the days when Army games consisted of little plastic men that littered trenches and bunkers scooped out of the backyard dirt? Or teams of kids playing good guys and bad guys with rubber band guns, cap guns and wearing their dad’s World War II Army boots?

Well, those days are long gone and Army video games have taken their place. Today, DVDs, Xboxes, and Play Stations have replaced the backyard dirt and much of the imagination that kept kids busily and happily occupied for days on end. However, children, teens, and adults still enjoy playing Army video games in the 21st century. Instead of dirt and tree forts, they play with Game Boys, Nintendo’s, PlayStations and Xboxes. One of the most popular games ever created, called America’s Army: Rise of a Soldier has registered over 6 million users to date. The first-person action game can be played online in small teams and is available on PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Colonel Casey Wardynski, director of the America’s Army game project, told National Defense, "We’ll be more available to kids in terms of reference about what it is to be a soldier."

Stephen Matulac, producer for Ubisoft, said, "We wanted to provide a single player experience for the user, to experience what it would be like to have a career in the Army."

While there may be plenty of real life Army soldiers and veterans who disagree with the statement that anyone who is not in the Army can experience what it is like, the game requires players to go through a virtual basic training period, acquire various career skills, complete training and combat missions and become proficient in everything from marksmanship to survival.

Whether playing on a desktop screen or a PSP or Xbox, there is no shortage of Army combat real-time strategy games, first-person and third person shooter games on the market today. Dozens of gaming magazines dedicate their content to providing cheats and tips on how to advance through various levels of increasingly complex scenarios and missions.
