Army Cavalry Scout Careers

The Army Cavalry scout is the reconnaissance eyes and ears on the battlefield for the Commander. They report and relay information, sightings of the enemy, as well as information about enemy movements, makeup and other vital information. They are the ones that the leaders turn to when timely and accurate information about the enemy is needed. The Army Cavalry Scout engage and track the enemy using scout vehicles, high power vision devices, and listening gear that enable them to keep track of the enemy troop movements and report on them with accuracy. Cavalry Army Scouts work to engage the enemy and at times employ anti Armor weapons when necessary, as they track, field and report to their commanders on the activities and movement of the enemy. It is the Cavalry scouts that often call in weapons fire and direct the usage of weapons systems down upon the enemy positions.

The duties of a Cavalry Army Scout are many, some of them include such activities as serving as a mobile observation and listening post, collecting data on tunnels, bridges, routes and trail activities, using principles of camouflage and concealment, performing navigation during combat, preparing ammunition and weapons systems on scout and infantry vehicles, and assisting in navigation during combat operations.

The Cavalry Army scout is required to load, fire, and clear crew served and armored weapons, and to act as part of the larger armor or infantry unit that they are members of. They job of Cavalry scout is one that requires excellent physical conditioning, as well as endurance because they often operate for long periods of time without a break or without being able to rest. Being able to operate in stressful situations is crucial to be able to work in this position. If you are a person who handles stress well, who can face danger regularly and who views difficult situations as a challenge this may be a job specialty that you would excel in.

Training begins with Army Basic Combat Training for 9 weeks, and then continues at One Station Unit Training for 16 weeks. This is training that is in the classroom, and in simulated field exercises. This is a position where training never really stops; there are always situations and drills to prepare for actual cavalry scout activity in the field. It is a job that requires a high state of military and situational readiness, and a constant state of awareness.
