Coalition Troops Work With Iraqi Forces To Clear Out Insurgency
The ongoing operations to provide security and safety to the Hyyaniyah region in Basra has resulted in success. The Coalition troops and Iraqi Security forces have successfully eliminated the insurgent forces that previously had been holed up in the region. These insurgents had used the area as a base of operations, but now have either been captured, killed or chased away by the joint efforts of Iraqi troops and coalition soldiers.
U.S Marine Battalion troops have worked closely with Iraqi Police and National Army members to provide security and patrol of the entire Basra region in the last few weeks. The Iraqi Army has begun to come into its own, being able to operate more on an individual basis with less assistance from coalition forces. This has led to an overall increase of successful security operations.

After one recent patrol Iraqi Army members reported to Coalition forces that there was a large weapons cache located at a nearby school. Coalition troops seized the weapons and destroyed the explosives and ammunition that were discovered.
In the two days of patrol they found nearly 30 rocket propelled grenades and a number of 120 mm and 105 mm mortar rounds, as well as RPG tubes, IED explosives and heavy machine guns.
“It definitely was a former area used as a stronghold,” said Major Robert Washington, military Advisor to Iraqi Troops in the area. “We were very glad to be able to eliminate these weapons,” said Major Washington.
