187th Infantry Assists Yusifiyah Market

Farmers Wholesale Products Grand Re Opening

A former area that was known for its marketplace was recently opened as a Farmers Market in Yusifiyah. It had been closed for four years. “It was a economic center before the war,” said Captain Steve McGregor. Captain McGregor is the projects officer for the 3rd BCT, 187th Infantry Regiment, and 3rd Battalion. “The market that used to be here shut down because of all the fighting that happened just after the Fall of Saddam Hussein,” said Captain McGregor.

The new market was rebuilt and funded with micro grants at the efforts of the Coalition. Residents were very helpful and encouraged to apply for grants to restart old businesses, and to start new businesses. The goal is to help local farming and farmers to be able to turn a profit. The normal marketplaces can only take a little bit of produce at a time, at the new Yusifiyah wholesale market people can not only buy in bulk, but they are able to support the local farmers too.

The market on the site was the site of a huge terrorist attack that occurred in 2004 and ultimately led to the closure of the site. It became a haven for criminal activity, and became a burnt out location.

The Iraqi 6th Army, 25th Brigade, 4th Battalion has agreed to become responsible for the security of the marketplace, and the local Ministry of Sewage has worked to help clear the area of garbage.
