Biometrics Taught To Iraqi Army

Coalition Soldiers Work To Improve Identification Techniques

One of the most important issues in the war torn Iraq that has been encountered by the Coalition has been the effort to try and identify who are the combatants and who are the people that should be allowed in the area. There have been several incidents where US Coalition personnel have posed for pictures with people who later have been identified as insurgents, which has been very embarrassing. To help combat this, when a member of the citizens have been identified and they are known to not be combatants, then they give their personal and physical information to the coalition in the form of a series of measurements.

These measurements are referred to as biometrics, and they are very accurate if done on someone who is 100 percent identified, they can be recognized in the future by the biometric data collected.

The Coalition is expanding their biometric program to include teaching various members of the Iraqi 14th Army on how to take accurate measurements for the biometric database. It is thought that eventually it will aid in finding out where and who the remaining insurgents are. All personnel that are interviewed in certain areas are then recorded, or their biometrics is recorded, and then the information is stored on a database for future identification.
