If you join the Navy and you are able to earn a spot in the Submarine service, then you will wind up attending the Navy Basic Enlisted Submarine School. It is a series of courses and an educational program that features different situations that are possible on board a submarine that you may serve on in the United States Fleet. The Enlisted Submarine School is a valuable experience and one that is designed to help give a prospective submarine sailor the skills and education necessary to serve on any of the submarines in the U.S. Fleet. Sailors participate in an exercise during their program, which mimics a leading vessel.
The exercise is referred to as the “Wet Trainer,†and it is one where 17 sailors are packed into a very small room that is representative of a space on a Submarine. It is then flooded, and the sailors are trained how to respond to try and save the ship from sinking. The different damage control techniques that they are taught in the classroom and the skills and tasks they learn they get a chance to put in to practical application to “save the ship.†Damage control is only one aspect of the different types of training that is available at Submarine school. Each new training class that comes in with raw Navy Submarine Recruits are taken by the trainers, and they are devoted to teaching the skills and information needed. Many of the new sailors are just out of boot camp and pretty green behind the ears.

There are times that the training deals with toxic chemicals, or onboard ship fire, smoke or water, or other issues that a prospective submarine student may encounter when on board his first command. No matter what the nature of the damage control situation, the staff and trainers of the Navy Submarine School are there to make sure that mistakes are corrected, that everyone learns what they do wrong, and that most of all everyone is kept safe.
When it comes to getting things right, the trainers are relentless. They make sure that not only do the people that make mistakes correct them, but also that everyone on the crew understands what the mistake was, why it was made and how to do it right. This is because, in Sub School, it is possible to do it over. In real live, there are many situations that require that it be done the right way the first time or lives are lost and sometimes the vessel is endangered.
