Working as a Servicemember has benefits that do not stop after they separate from the Service. There are a number of different benefits and services available for Veterans, many of which are well known. Benefits through the service related Montgomery GI bill can assist in education and career options, but there are other benefits that are not as well known. As a Veteran you have an advantage with preference in many different types of hiring. If you choose to apply for service in the Federal Government, or other sectors of Government then you can often qualify for preferential hiring points. If you are a disabled Veteran or if you served in the military during specific periods in the past you may qualify for additional hiring preference points as well. This type of hiring preference applied to both new hires, and retention in the Federal Workforce. To qualify for the preferential hiring you have to be honorably discharged or at lease a general discharge, any other type of discharge is not qualified.
There are some steps that you must take to take advantage for the hiring preference:
Apply-You have to find a job that considers veterans preference points. There are announcements put out on a regular basis by most Federal Agencies and programs that give job preference points. You will have to keep an eye out for a Federal Job Announcement or Federal Job Vacancy announcement. In the announcement itself you will have different information, and it will give you tips to how to apply and claim job preference points.
Compile a Resume- You should make sure that you have a resume and are ready to completely apply for any job that requires detailed information. Having a resume is an excellent choice, it allows you to have all the different information that is needed available at your fingertips, and you need to have details on different experiences and military training that you have been involved in.
Ranking- Based on how you qualify, you will be given a numeric ranking or score. You will qualify for 5 or 10 points for your veteran’s preference points. When you apply you will be ranked by one of several methods. Best Qualified is one, and then it will give a veteran the edge if otherwise qualified over someone that does not have veteran’s points.

Numerically- Another method is numerically. That is a process where every candidate is given a numerical score based on testing or other qualifications, if there are qualified veterans with veterans points those people without veteran points are not considered.
