Public Affairs Army Careers

When you are in the Public Affairs branch of the Army, you work to assist relations with the local citizens, and how they interact with the Army. The person that deals with the dissemination of information and media relations is called the Army Public Affairs Specialist. You will work with news releases, news articles, newspaper stories and photographs. You will work with different Internet and web based material, and sources of military and civilian based news. The public Affairs specialist works to assist and coordinate Army Public Affairs programs with military and civilian news media. Broadcast television, radio and media sources are one of the outlets that the Army uses to spread information on Army events and Army personnel. They are the source of information for the general public to get information of interest about the Army and Army related events. The Public Affairs specialist is the person that works to schedule different events to aid in making soldiers available. Preparing and distributing military news materials, distributing Army event information, and news on different Army Personnel. You will help arrange and set up interviews with different personnel that are of interest for civilian interviews, as well as helping with dissemination of general Army Information. One of the sources to give information to these media outlets are the Public Affair Army specialist, and they assist members of the media to learn about the Army and Army personnel. They are also conduits for the Army Story to be related to the public, and shared with civilian groups. Training for the position of Army Public Affairs Specialist starts with Basic Combat Training for 9 weeks, followed by advanced individual training. After Basic training you will attend 12 Weeks of public Affairs Training at Fort Meade, Maryland. You will learn about how to perform the duties of a public affairs specialist. You will work with different types of media and learn a variety of journalism skills to allow you to perform the duties of a Public Affairs Specialist. You will work with cameras, photographs, news releases, and other types of media. Part of the training will be in the classroom, but other areas will be hands on, and you can learn valuable skills in dealing with covering events and news items.
