There was quite a celebration among the local citizens at the Bridge that stretches to connect the route to Busayefi and Haw Rajab was opened. It is seen as a symbol of community unity, and will join the two communities for economics and societal interaction.
When the link between the two communities was severed by insurgent forces, the two communities both suffered. Not only did the Mercedes Canal separate them, but also they became more isolated in general. Now that the bridge has been re established, both communities are excited about the future. Both communities have a desire to interact, and the bridge resembles the culmination of efforts from both villages to interact.
Most of the funding for this project actually came from the Local Iraqi Government. In the past many of these type of projects have come from the Commanders Emergency Relief program funds, but as the security has increased in a positive manner so has the funds available from the Gol to fund projects in their own community.
Sheikhs from the neighboring region attended the event, and it is seen as a very positive event, linking the two villages in a positive manner. “This is simply a very important event, and it is notable that the money for this project was funded from the Gol and the community itself,†said Major John Brock.
Major Brock is the Commander for 2nd BCT, 3rd Infantry Division.
