411th Civil Affairs Interviews Fish Farmers

Efforts To Gauge Recovery Progress Successful

Both efforts to help farmers rebuild and the efforts to track their success have been issues that the Coalition has been taking an active interest in. The Civil Affairs branch has worked to help and assist different groups of farmers, and now they are going back to see how they are doing.

The Lutifiyah area is one that members of the 411th Civil Affairs previously interviewed, and they have returned in the last ten days to see how the fish farms that were constructed there are doing.

Three types of different carp are being grown by area farmers: silver carp, grass carp, and common carp. “We are trying to help the farmers grow to where they can supply a mass product,” said Army Specialist Timothy Perkins.

Perkins is attached to 411th Civil Affairs, Company B.

The Iraqi government is working to set up a kind of fish farmers agricultural committee, with the assistance of the civil Affairs Army battalion. “The farmers will be able to eventually educate other farmers on how to care for these kinds of fish and agriculture products,” said Perkins.

Once the committee becomes a reality it will have members of the farmers on it, tribal and area leaders, sheikhs and others from around the area.

The ponds in the area have really began to grow, and they are just now starting to be commercially viable. With continued help the areas could really serve as a showcase for new Iraqi farming methods.
