MNF Division Teaches Iraqi Citizens Agricultural Courses
With the access to water, equipment and reclaimed lands, all that is left is knowing how to farm and having the motivation to do so. The local citizens are providing the motivation, and with assistance from the Coalition, farmers are working to farm the lands surrounding Wasit. In a series of agricultural meetings the first part of May, the coalition worked to meet with farmers and assist them in specific issues that they are encountering.
Brigadier General Edward Cardon met with Wasit Agricultural leaders and over 20 different farmers from the Wasit Area to start the process of getting all different levels of government to work together for the benefit of farming.
“This is an initial first step, and will serve to find out what problems must be solved,†said General Cardon.
The Wasit area was well known as an agricultural area until the fighting, which has occurred the last several years. Farmers now on occasion suffer from a lack of seeds, supplies, even at times a lack of water. With the assistance of the Coalition and the Iraqi Government, many of these issues can be put to rest.

The government is providing low interest loans to farmers, and other assistance is finally helping the farmers begin to come back. Not everything the farmers want is at times supplied, but the situation overall is improving.
